The Leyland FG Crewbus, used by British Rail from the 1960s through to the 1980s, was a distinctive and practical vehicle based on Leyland’s innovative FG light commercial chassis. The FG was instantly recognisable due to its unique ‘bustle’ front wings and inset doors, which gave the driver excellent kerbside visibility — a useful feature for urban and station work. In its crewbus form, the FG was adapted to transport railway staff, such as train drivers and guards, between depots, stations, and outlying sidings, playing an unsung but essential role in the day-to-day operation of the rail network.
Typically fitted with a diesel engine and a simple, durable interior, the FG crewbus was valued for its reliability and ease of maintenance. The bodywork, often finished in British Rail’s familiar rail blue or earlier liveries like crimson or grey and subsequently yellow, was built to accommodate multiple passengers and their kit. Though purely functional in purpose, these vehicles have become cult classics among enthusiasts of British transport history, remembered fondly for their quirks and their presence in railway yards and sidings across the UK. Today, a handful survive in preservation, often lovingly restored to their BR livery.
3D printed in resin and finished in yellow, our version of the model is supplied with a set of decals that you can cut out and apply yourself to recreate the BR look as per our model. However, this model can also be supplied unpainted if required – simply leave a note at the checkout if you want this.
